Grupo de Riego y Ecofisiología de Cultivos (Grupo REC)

    

Definición

El Grupo REC lo componemos 8 doctores, 1 licenciado, 1 técnico y varios investigadores predoctorales, personas contratadas de diverso tipo y personas que hacen su TFM o TFG. Mantenemos colaboraciones nacionales e internacionales con grupos de investigación, universidades, centros de investigación, divulgación y transferencia, y empresas del sector.

Trabajamos en la optimización del uso del agua en agricultura, sobre todo en lo que se refiere al riego. Estudiamos la respuesta del cultivo al estrés hídrico y usamos el conocimiento adquirido para elaborar modelos mecanísticos sobre su respuesta a la disponibilidad de agua. Con dichos modelos y otras herramientas, desarrollamos y evaluamos estrategias de riego y métodos para la programación del riego. Nuestra especialidad es el riego de precisión en un entorno digital, orientado a conseguir una agricultura intensiva sostenible. Trabajamos con los cultivos principales de nuestra zona, tanto herbáceos como leñosos, aunque casi todos nuestros trabajos son con frutales, entre los que destaca el olivar.

Nuestro objetivo es la optimización del uso del agua en agricultura, y para ello trabajamos principalmente en la mejora del riego, a partir de la elaboración de modelos mecanísticos sobre la respuesta del cultivo al estrés hídrico, y del desarrollo y evaluación de estrategias de riego y de métodos para su programación. Nuestra especialidad es el riego de precisión en un entorno digital, orientado a conseguir una agricultura intensiva sostenible. Trabajamos con los cultivos principales de nuestra zona, tanto herbáceos como leñosos, aunque casi todos nuestros trabajos son con frutales, entre los que destaca el olivar. De hecho, tenemos una experiencia de tres décadas en el riego del olivar, habiendo estudiado prácticamente todos los sistemas de riego del cultivo y en plantaciones de distintas densidades, incluidas la superintensivas.

Nuestras líneas principales de trabajo son:

– Estudio de los procesos fisiológicos que regulan la respuesta de las especies cultivadas a las condiciones medioambientales y de manejo. Esto nos permite elaborar y mejorar modelos de absorción de agua desde el suelo, de transpiración y de fotosíntesis. Estos modelos los adaptamos para usarlos como herramientas para mejorar la comprensión de los mecanismos fisiológicos que regulan la respuesta de los cultivos al estrés hídrico, y para optimizar las estrategias de riego y otras prácticas de cultivo orientadas a un uso más racional del agua.

– Desarrollo de estrategias de riego con las que optimizar la productividad del agua empleada por el cultivo. Trabajamos con riego suficiente para reponer las necesidades del cultivo y con todas las variedades de riego deficitario que se han descrito. Prestamos especial atención al desarrollo de estrategias de riego deficitario que permitan el desarrollo de una agricultura intensiva sostenible.

– Identificación y desarrollo de indicadores de estrés hídrico para su aplicación en la programación del riego de plantaciones comerciales. Trabajamos con indicadores del estado hídrico del suelo, de la atmósfera y de la propia planta. Nuestro grupo, de hecho, está especializado en este último campo, y trabajamos con indicadores tanto convencionales (potencial hídrico y conductancia estomática) como automáticos (flujo de savia, variación del diámetro del tronco, potencial de turgencia de la hoja). Buscamos indicadores aptos para un riego de precisión, es decir, que midan de forma continua y automática, dotados de sistemas para la transmisión de datos y que se puedan combinar con el uso de imágenes remotas para la detección de la variabilidad en la parcela.

– Digitalización del riego. Tratamos de desarrollar indicadores y sistemas de interpretación y transmisión de la información para la gestión digital del riego. Eso incluye no solo el desarrollo de indicadores para un seguimiento continuo y automático del estrés hídrico que hemos mencionado arriba, sino también la aplicación de algoritmos para la interpretación de la información necesaria para la programación del riego y el desarrollo de aplicaciones para la transmisión sencilla y efectiva de la información al agricultor. Esto incluye el desarrollo de sistemas para la ayuda a la toma de decisiones, IoT, inteligencia artificial y otras técnicas relacionadas con la digitalización de la información.
