Biodiversity and Ecosystem Functioning Laboratory
BioFunLab
Description and Objectives
The BioFunLab, led by Manuel Delgado Baquerizo, aims to advance our knowledge on biodiversity and the functioning of natural, agricultural and urban ecosystems in a changing world at global and regional scales.
More specifically, BioFunLab aims to:
(1) lead research on the structure and functioning of environmental microbiomes.
(2) assess the effects of global change on the biodiversity and functioning of our ecosystems.
(3) discovering new global ecosystem patterns.
(4) creating new global atlases of biodiversity and functioning. To carry out this research.
BioFunLab leads multidisciplinary and multifunctional studies combining global sampling and large-scale field and laboratory experiments with advanced remote sensing, machine learning and omics techniques. BioFunLab aims to promote the functioning and sustainability of terrestrial ecosystems on a global scale.
Contribution to Science

Valorisation and integral chemical characterisation of lignocellulosic crops, focused on their sustainable industrial use.

Identification of the problems that limit the sustainable industrial use of lignocellulosic materials.

Development of biotechnological methods based on the use of enzymes (mainly oxidoreductases) for the modification of the components of lignocellulosic crops for their better use.
Facilities
Leaders in the coordination of global collaborative networks
The BioFunLab, led by Manuel Delgado-Baquerizo, works in the coordination of multiple global collaborative networks that include scientists from more than 30 countries around the world. These networks include CLIMIFUN (https://cutt.ly/1oVJ69C), which investigates changes in the soil microbiome during soil formation processes, and MUSGONET, which investigates the plant microbiome in natural and urban ecosystems on a global scale.
In addition, BioFunLab is a coordinating member of three global initiatives, which aim to characterise the microbiome of economically and functionally important crop species worldwide including rice, wheat, maize, potato, cotton and vineyard areas (Global Initiative on Crop Microbiome and Sustainable Agriculture; https://cutt.ly/lrrpT47 and VineMicrobiome; https://cutt.ly/ooHY1pY), and to characterise the microbiome of wild species related to current crops (MICROWILD; https://cutt.ly/drrpRFP).
The URBANFUN experiment
BioFunLab is leading an innovative experiment (the “URBANFUN experiment”) that aims to evaluate, for the first time, the impacts of climate change on urban green areas.
This experiment, launched and coordinated by BioFunLab, already consists of eleven experimental stations on university campuses and botanical gardens in Spain and Portugal. The pilot experiment was installed at the Pablo de Olavide University in 2020, and was followed by multiple experimental stations at the Botanical Garden of Albacete and the Universities of Cádiz, Alicante, Coímbra, Almería, Vigo, Girona, Oviedo, León and Autónoma de Madrid.
Its experimental stations are the future of urban research, and are used to raise public awareness of the importance of climate change in our cities.
