Last Friday, November 8, the students of the Ibn Jaldún Secondary School of Dos Hermanas who participate in the Citizen Science project “We recycle compost from urban waste selectively collected in urban gardens (RECICOMPHUERTOS)” visited the social gardens of Utrera where they were able to exchange experiences with the gardeners who also participate in this project. The mayor of Utrera, Francisco Jiménez Morales, and the Councillor for the Environment, Consuelo Navarro, were also present at the activity. Previously, the students visited the Montemarta Cónica Waste Treatment Centre where staff from Aborgase showed them the facilities and explained their recycling work with our urban waste.
This project is carried out in collaboration with the Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology – Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities (project reference FCT-22-18403) and this activity has been co-financed by the Grant for scientific dissemination activities of the VII Own Research Plan of the University of Seville.
In this study, a high-quality compost from the selective collection of MSW is being tested for the cultivation of various vegetables. The compost comes from the municipality of Olvera and has been supplied by Básica SAU, a public company that manages the waste of the Association of Municipalities of the Sierra de Cádiz. Tests are being carried out with the compost with various crops and the students are responsible for its care and the control and weighing of the vegetables. The results have been very positive, with a lot of involvement from the students, guided by their teachers.
