Environmental Microbiology and Cultural Heritage

Definition:

Environmental Microbiology (subterranean, terrestrial and aquatic environments), especially focused on biodegradation of materials and pollutants, biodeterioration and conservation of Cultural Heritage. Biogeochemical cycle of the elements. Geochemistry and environmental chemistry.

Objectives:

The objectives of the group are framed inside environmental microbiology in its widest sense (water, soils and subsoil) and particularly subterranean environments, with especial attention to microbial biodiversity and ecology in caves, mines, tunnels, catacombs and tombs. In these studies, bacterial and fungal taxonomy, description of new microbial genera and species, and their participation in the biogeochemical cycle of the elements, stand out.

Also, archaeological sites, monuments and Cultural Assets are studied by means of modern analytical, non- and semi-destructive techniques, their treats are identified and recommendations for their conservation are proposed.
