The Service of Microbiology of Cultural Heritage of the Institute for Natural Resources and Agrobiology of Seville pretends to cover the existing demand in this scientific area. We pay particular attention on the study of the biodeterioration of Cultural Heritage, the analysis and diagnosis of the state or conservation and/or deterioration of materials (rock paintings, frescoes, buildings and monuments, oil paintings, acrylics, etc. in museums; pergamines, textiles, wood, pottery and every kind of materials used in cultural assets), as well as control methods and recommendations for conservation. Moreover, we research on the aerobiology of confined spaces (buildings, museums, libraries, caves harbouring rock paintings, mines, etc.), identifying the microorganisms in the air and their concentration.
- Aerobiology and air quality (microbial pollution), including counting of number of bacteria and fungi as Colony Forming Units per cubic meter of air (CFU/m3), identification and calculation of the abundance of microorganisms in the air, as well as any other kind of study related to the biodeterioration of Cultural Heritage by bacteria, fungi and other microorganisms.
- Digital image analysis. Detection, quantification and monitoring of areas colonized by microorganisms.
