This Friday, April 10, 2025, students from the José María Infantes Secondary School in Utrera harvested escaroles from the compost experiment for the Citizen Science project “We Recycle Compost from Selective Collection Urban Waste in Urban Gardens (RECICOMPHUERTOS),” in which the school has participated since last year. This year, several secondary school students, with their teacher Elena Revuelta, were in charge of conducting the experiments. In this experiment, which tested high-quality urban compost from selective collection (bioresidues) compared to manure, the largest escaroles were those grown with compost. The compost came from the municipality of Olvera and was supplied by Básica SAU, a public company that manages waste for the Association of Municipalities of the Sierra de Cádiz. The students were responsible for caring for the crops grown using organic farming practices and for checking and weighing the vegetables.
This project is carried out in collaboration with the Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology – Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities (project reference FCT-22-18403).
