Plant Biomass – Use and Valuation

Description

 

Due to the scarcity and high price of energy, as well as environmental awareness related to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, there is currently a strong trend in developed countries to reduce our dependence on fossil fuels for both energy production and other industrial products, and to replace them with other more renewable sources. In this sense, plant biomass, which is present in great abundance and at low cost (either as agroforestry crops or as residues of agricultural activity), represents the main source of renewable materials on Earth, and therefore has great potential as raw materials for obtaining both products and renewable energy (biofuels) according to the modern concept of Lignocellulose Biorefineries. The research activity of our Group is focused on the study of the chemical composition and valorization of agroforestry crops (wood, herbaceous plants, agricultural residues) to achieve a more complete and rational use of plant biomass as renewable raw material for the manufacture of products of industrial interest. On the other hand, this integrated use of agroforestry crops takes advantage of the great potential of biotechnology, especially enzymes, to obtain high value-added products from renewable raw materials (plant biomass) under aspects of sustainability and respect for the environment.

 

 

Objectives

  • Valorization and integral chemical characterization of lignocellulosic crops, focused on their sustainable industrial use.
  • Identification of the problems that limit the sustainable industrial utilization of lignocellulosic materials.
  • Development of biotechnological methods based on the use of enzymes (mainly oxidoreductases) for the modification of the components of lignocellulosic crops for a better utilization of them.
