MEETING OF THE EUROPEAN PROJECT WOODZYMES

The Institute of Natural Resources and Agrobiology of Seville (IRNAS) of the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) hosted on 15-16 November the first technical meeting of the European project WoodZymes (Extremozymes for wood-based building blocks: from pulp mill to board and insulation products), which started on June 1, 2018. WoodZymes is a Research and Innovation Project of H2020 funded by the “Bio-Based Industries Joint Undertaking” (www.bbi-europe.eu). The meeting was attended by representatives of the project partners, among which are world leading companies in the production of cellulose (The Navigator Company and Fibre Excellence), manufacture of fiberboard (FINSA France) and insulating materials (Soprema); a biotechnology company specialized in producing extremophile enzymes (Metgen) and leading technology centers in the field of wood, cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin (RAIZ, CTP and FCBA), as well as three CSIC research institutes (CIB, IRNAS and IATA). The contribution of IRNAS to WoodZymes is led by Dr. Ana Gutiérrez of the research group “Lignocellulosic Materials of Industrial Interest” and focuses on the study of the chemical analyses of lignins and lignin-derived compounds, resulting from the enzymatic treatments carried out in the project. Dr. Jorge Rencoret, responsible for the chemical characterization of lignins in the project, by using the most advanced analytical techniques, presented the main results obtained by IRNAS during the first six months of the project.
