Description of the service

The experimental farm “La Hampa”, with an area of approximately 40 hectares, aims to provide service and technical advice to projects financed by both public and private entities, being a basic support for the research projects of the Institute’s Departments. The great usefulness of the experimental farm is explained by its proximity to IRNAS, its infrastructures, its varied soil types and irrigation systems, which, together with the favourable climate of the area, allow it to sustain two crop seasons a year.

In its 40 years of experience with IRNAS, it has developed a significant number of projects funded by the European Union, the Andalusian Regional Government and private companies. Among the field work carried out on the farm, the following scientific production should be highlighted:

Working crops

As a commercial operation:

  • Olive and citrus trees
  • Cereals and oilseeds
  • Tomato for industry

As experimental plots:

  • Olives – Paulownias – Rice – Wheat – Sunflower – Bluegrass – Rye grass – Alcornoques , etc.

R&D lines in development

  • Controlled deficit irrigation
  • Conservation agriculture. Long-term effects
  • Nutrient and contaminant dynamics in soil
  • Physiological mechanisms controlling transpiration and photosynthesis
  • Methods for irrigation scheduling based on in-plant measurements
  • Remediation of soils contaminated by trace elements
  • Use of organic waste as amendments
  • Organic amendments on the behaviour of agrochemicals in the soil
  • Fast-growing plants for the production of biomass for energy purposes
  • Plant biotechnology

Infrastructure
