Last Thursday, April 10th, students from the first year of high school and the fourth and second years of secondary school of the Miguel de Cervantes Secondary School in Seville participated in an outreach activity for the Citizen Science project “We Recycle Compost from Selective Urban Waste in Urban Gardens (RECICOMP-HUERTOS).” The students visited the community gardens of Utrera, where they learned about the agricultural trials being carried out as part of the project and exchanged experiences with the gardeners participating in it. The students then visited the Montemarta Cónica MSW Treatment Center, where staff from the company Aborgase showed them the facilities and explained the recycling separation work carried out with our urban waste. In this way, the students could see the complete cycle from the composting of organic matter collected selectively in the new brown containers, which transforms the waste, to its use in the gardens, which produces new quality food.
This project is carried out in collaboration with the Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology – Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities (project reference FCT-22-18403) and this activity has been co-financed by the Grant for scientific dissemination activities of the VII Own Research Plan of the University of Seville.
