El grupo MOSS es un laboratorio de referencia internacional en Geoquímica Orgánica y el primer grupo español que abordó el estudio de la Química del Humus. El grupo centra sus investigaciones en distintos aspectos de la Biogeoquímica del Suelo, principalmente en el estudio de los ciclos de C y N y sobre cómo las plantas, los microorganismos o la gestión y uso del suelo afectan a su dinámica y secuestro. El grupo ha realizado considerables progresos en la caracterización molecular de los materiales orgánicos en suelos, aguas y sedimentos, así como en recursos fósiles orgánicos (turbas, carbones, querógenos, etc.) y residuos de interés agrícola (composts, humatos fertilizantes, biochar, etc.). Mantiene una estrategia de I+D+I aplicada y multidisciplinar, colaboraciones con grupos de investigación nacionales e internacionales y con el sector empresarial. Dispone de laboratorios de geoquímica orgánica con equipamiento avanzado para la caracterización detallada de materiales orgánicos macromoleculares de estructura compleja, que incluye RMN en estado sólido, GC/Q-TOF, Py-GC/Q-TOF, GC/MS, Py-GC/MS, HT/TC-IRMS, Py-GC-HT/TC-IRMS. Además, el grupo gestiona y mantiene tres servicios científico técnicos del CSIC: Laboratorio de Isótopos Estables (LIE-IRNAS 824754), Espectroscopía de Resonancia Magnética Nuclear (RMN 824752) y Análisis Térmicos (SAT 907315).

Laboratorio de isotopos estables (Thermo Scientific Delta V Advantage + Trace GC Ultra + GC Isolink con dos reactores C y HT). El equipo permite el análisis de razones isotópicas δ13C, δ15N o δ2H en muestra completa y en compuestos específicos.

Laboratorio de resonancia magnética nuclear (Bruker WB 400MHz). El equipo permite el análisis de H, C, N, P en muestras sólidas (CP-MAS) y semisólidas «imaging»

Laboratorio de pirolisis de ultra alta resolución (Pirolizador de microhorno Frontier Lab 3030D + Agilent GC 8890 Q-TOF 7250). Permite el análisis detallado de muestras sólidas y líquidas y masa exacta (<2ppm para 1 pg OFN a m/z 271.9867).

El objetivo principal del grupo MOSS es:
El estudio del impacto de factores ambientales en los ciclos biogeoquímicos del C y N, su implicación en la sostenibilidad de los ecosistemas, en el secuestro de C y N y en el cambio climático global.
Objetivos específicos:
1) Caracterización de la estructura molecular de la materia orgánica de suelos, sedimentos (recientes y fósiles) y residuos, orientada a la obtención de información medioambiental y al establecimiento de relaciones estructura-función.
2) Dinámica de la materia orgánica en suelos y sedimentos, implicaciones en los mecanismos de secuestro de carbono. Cantidad y calidad de las formas naturales recalcitrantes de C.
3) Caracterización, aplicaciones y efectos en el medio ambiente de materiales carbonosos altamente refractarios: «black carbon» y «biochar».
4) Identificación de marcadores moleculares (biomarcadores) subrogados al estado de salud y calidad de suelos y sedimentos; impactos medioambientales (incendios forestales), fenómenos de contaminación (vertidos orgánicos) y reconstrucciones paleoambientales.
