January 22nd 2011. WWF-Spain includes the cork oak species in the top-ten list of endareged species in the Iberian Peninsula. This is the only plant species in a list that also includes the Iberian Linx and the Spanish Imperial Eagle, both protected species in the Doñana National Park. You can see the complete report here.

December 14th 2010. The Natural Environmental Research Council from the UK brought out the Pajarera Project in its site for divulgation of environmental research, Planet Earth Online. In this web site, some of the results of the Project, recently published in the journal Biological Conservation, are commented. The report in that site emphasizes the management conflict between maintaining the nesting wading bird colonies and conservating the cork oak population, which faces serious demographic problems. November 14th 2010. Some of the results of the Pajarera Project have been published in the journal Biological Conservation. In this article, the effects of the accumulation of bird detritus on some properties of the soils in Las Pajareras are analyzed. In addition, the relationships between the bird influence and some tree health indicators are assessed. The results show an lower health status in those trees that are occupied birds. Increases in the concentrations of the heavy Nitrogen stable isotope (indicator of bird detritus) are asociated to water stress symptoms in the trees.
