Description of the service
The Thermal Analysis Service (SAT 907315) at the Institute for Natural Resources and Agrobiology (IRNAS) primarily aims to provide simultaneous real-time measurements of heat flow (DSC) and weight change (TGA) for solid samples to research groups and researchers from the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC), universities, and both public and private enterprises upon request. These analyses are extremely useful for characterizing both organic and mineral samples. Moreover, they are widely used in material characterization, studies of soils, sediments, foodstuffs, and in quality control, allowing for the quantification of fractions based on their thermal stability.
Thermal decomposition analysis under controlled conditions provides a distinctive fingerprint of the sample composition. SAT has served numerous research projects that required, among other things, studying the stability of organic amendments, carbon sequestration in soils, the detection of plastics and additives, the identification of plastic types in waste, the characterization of lignocellulosic biomass, the maturity level of composts, and the composition of biochar samples.

The Service is equipped for its proper functioning with a TA Instruments brand simultaneous real-time heat flow (DSC) and weight change (TGA) measurement system, Model Auto Discovery SDT 650-DSC-TGA. This apparatus allows for automatic sampling in 30 positions thanks to its autosampler and dual-arm thermobalance. It can reach working temperatures up to 1300 °C and offers the choice of working atmosphere among inert, oxidizing, and reducing conditions. Additionally, it includes a PC, the TRIOS control software, and a complete calibration kit.
Services
- Simultaneous analysis of Thermogravimetry and Differential Scanning Calorimetry (Tg-DsC) with a continuous heating program in an inert atmosphere (P1_Var1).
- Thermal analysis with a custom heating program (tailor-made) in an inert or non-inert atmosphere (P1_Var2).
- Furthermore, the available technology allows for the determination of volatile organic matter (VOM) and ash content in biomass samples (P2).
SAT has provided services to numerous research groups, companies, and universities (e.g., Univ. Almería; Univ. Sevilla, Univ. Huelva; Univ. Vienna; T.U. Berlin).
Conditions of use
-
To request SAT analysis, please contact the service manager by e-mail. The formalisation of the application for the benefits of this service will be carried out through a form (Application Form).
The samples to be analysed must be provided by the user, homogenised and dry.
