The IRNAS-CSIC researcher, Jose Julio Ortega Calvo, is the chairman of the scientific program of the 34th SETAC Europe congress in FIBES, Seville (May 5-9, 2024). It will be a premier international event, with the participation of approximately 2,500-3,000 delegates from around the world. Dr. Ortega was president of SETAC Europe in 2016/2017.

The theme of this year’s conference is “Science-based solutions in times of crisis: integrating science and policy for environmental challenges.” In our post-pandemic world, with food and cost of living crises exacerbated by armed conflict, environmental quality and long-term sustainable solutions are at risk. Therefore, there is a demand for new science-based solutions to future challenges. These include the redesign of the agri-food chain, the loss of biodiversity, changes in soil use and coastal ecosystems, and new regulatory frameworks that encourage sustainable innovations in the chemical industry.

SETAC Europe 2024 will bring together scientists from various disciplines from academia, business/industrial and government to share, debate, discuss, disseminate and facilitate the use and reuse of their latest scientific knowledge to support environmental management and protection. The scientific program will consist of more than 100 sessions organized into 7 major themes, guest speakers who will address various strategic aspects (science/policy interface, water scarcity, scientific integrity), as well as special sessions and multiple satellite events.

The deadline for sending abstracts (both oral and posters) is November 29, 2023. All information is available on the conference website, which is updated continuously.
