Group
Organic Matter in Soils and Sediments
MOSS
Definition
The MOSS group is an international reference laboratory in Organic Geochemistry and the first Spanish group that addressed the study of Humus Chemistry. The group focuses its research on different aspects of Soil Biogeochemistry, mainly on the study of C and N cycles and on how plants, microorganisms or soil management and use affect their dynamics and sequestration. The group has made considerable progress in the molecular characterization of organic materials in soils, water and sediments, as well as in organic fossil resources (peats, coals, kerogens, etc.) and residues of agricultural interest (composts, fertilizer humates, biochar, etc.). It maintains an applied and multidisciplinary R&D&I strategy, collaborations with national and international research groups and with the business sector. It has organic geochemistry laboratories with advanced equipment for the detailed characterization of macromolecular organic materials of complex structure, including solid state NMR, GC/Q-TOF, Py-GC/Q-TOF, GC/MS, Py-GC/MS, HT/TC-IRMS, Py-GC-HT/TC-IRMS. In addition, the group manages and maintains two scientific-technical services of CSIC: Stable Isotope Laboratory (LIE-IRNAS 824754) and Thermal Analysis (SAT 907315).

The study of the impact of environmental factors on C and N biogeochemical cycles, their implication on ecosystem sustainability, C and N sequestration and global climate change.
Specific objectives:
- Characterization of the molecular structure of organic matter in soils, sediments (recent and fossil) and residues, aimed at obtaining environmental information and establishing structure-function relationships.
- Dynamics of organic matter in soils and sediments, implications in carbon sequestration mechanisms. Quantity and quality of natural recalcitrant forms of C.
- Characterization, applications and environmental effects of highly refractory carbonaceous materials: “black carbon” and “biochar”.
- Identification of molecular markers (biomarkers) subrogated to the state of health and quality of soils and sediments; environmental impacts (forest fires), pollution phenomena (organic spills) and paleoenvironmental reconstructions.
