Descripción y Objetivos

 

El BioFunLab, liderado por Manuel Delgado Baquerizo, tiene como objetivo avanzar nuestro conocimiento sobre la biodiversidad y el funcionamiento de los ecosistemas naturales, agrícolas y urbanos en un mundo cambiante a escalas global y regional.

Más específicamente, BioFunLab tienen como objetivo:

(1) liderar investigaciones sobre la estructura y el funcionamiento de microbiomas ambientales.

(2) evaluar los efectos del cambio global sobre la biodiversidad y funcionamiento de nuestros ecosistemas.

(3) descubrir nuevos patrones ecosistémicos globales.

(4) la creación de nuevos atlas globales de biodiversidad y funcionamiento. Para llevar a cabo estas investigaciones.

 

BioFunLab lidera estudios multidisciplinares y multifuncionales combinando muestreos globales y experimentos campo y laboratorio a gran escala, con técnicas avanzadas de “remote sensing”, “machine learning” y “omics”. BioFunLab pretende fomentar el funcionamiento y la sostenibilidad de ecosistemas terrestres a escala global.

Líderes en la coordinación de redes globales de colaboración

El BioFunLab, liderado por Manuel Delgado-Baquerizo, trabaja en la coordinación de múltiple redes globales de colaboración que incluyen científicos de más de 30 países en todo el mundo. Estas redes incluyen CLIMIFUN (https://cutt.ly/1oVJ69C), que investiga los cambios en el microbioma de suelo durante los procesos de formación del suelo, y MUSGONET, que investigan el microbioma de plantas en ecosistemas naturales y urbanos a escala global. 

Además, BioFunLab es miembro coordinador de tres iniciativas globales, que tienen como objetivo caracterizar el microbioma de especies de cultivo de importancia económica y funcional a escala mundial incluyendo el arroz, trigo, maíz, patata, algodón y zonas de viñedos (Global Initiative on Crop Microbiome and Sustainable Agriculture; https://cutt.ly/lrrpT47 y VineMicrobiome;  https://cutt.ly/ooHY1pY), y caracterizar el microbioma de especies silvestres relacionadas con cultivos actuales (MICROWILD; https://cutt.ly/drrpRFP).

The URBANFUN experiment

BioFunLab lidera un novedoso experimento (El “URBANFUN experiment”) que pretende evaluar, por primer vez, los impactos del cambio climático sobre las zonas verdes urbanas.

Este experimento puesto en marcha y coordinado desde el BioFunLab, consta ya de once estaciones experimentales en campus universitarios y jardines botánicos de España y Portugal. El experimento piloto fue instalado en la Universidad Pablo de Olavide en 2020, y fue seguido por múltiples estaciones experimentales en el Jardín Botanico de Albacete y las Universidades de Cádiz, Alicante, Coímbra, Almería, Vigo, Girona, Oviedo, León y Autónoma de Madrid.

Sus estaciones experimentales son el futuro de la investigación urbana, y se usan para fomentar la concienciación de la población acerca de la importancia del cambio climático en nuestras ciudades.

El BioFunLab cuenta con el apoyo de una Unidad Asociada al CSIC: el laboratorio BioFun UPO-CSIC.

Los principales objetivos de esta Unidad Asociada de I+D+i son:

  1. Elaborar mapas globales de propiedades edáficas a diferentes escalas espaciales.
  2. Desarrollar una comprensión predictiva sobre los cambios en el ciclo de los nutrientes durante la formación del suelo.
  3. Investigar los efectos del cambio climático en el funcionamiento de los ecosistemas.
